Extended description

Newly built Mercatello Park, at 10 hectares in size is considered one of the largest parks in Europe in relation to the number of inhabitants. An important green lung located in the eastern part of the city, the park is very popular with the citizens of Salerno, who gather there to relax, walk or play sports.

The park has four thematic areas: “naturalistic area,” along the Mercatello stream that flows into the pond; “Mediterranean garden area,” characterized by tiled columns covered with creepers; “fruit orchard area,” with citrus trees; and “meadow area,” a vast grassy clearing.

Inside the park it is possible to visit the rock garden, where there is a greenhouse housing a collection of succulent plants, among the richest in southern Italy.

Every year, the Fair of the Crucifix, one of the oldest traditional events in Salerno, takes place along the streets that perimeter the park.
