The long history of Salerno is filled, in every era, with figures who left a lasting mark on the city. Many were physicians, even if they gained fame for other reasons — such as Frederick II’s minister, Giovanni da Procida. Others are shrouded in legend, like the magician Barliario. Some were born elsewhere but were honored by Salerno itself, like Robert Guiscard. And there is no shortage of women either, such as the physician Trotula, a magistra and author of important medical texts.
