Extended description

The new Tribunal of Salerno is housed in the Cittadella Giudiziaria, designed by British architect David Chipperfield, and is a functional work for the needs of judicial administration in the Salerno area, but it is also a great work of architecture and a functional redesign of a central area of the city. Work proceeded, with mixed fortunes and arduous construction events, from 2003 to 2017, and the relocation of the Judicial Offices was completed in 2020.

The design by David Chipperfield, was exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2002. The realization involves six buildings surrounded by greenery, with large windows; each building is of different heights and with alternating colors: green, red, and ochre. The buildings are then connected to each other by a series of porches and courts and placed on a black stone plate.

The area where the court complex stands is between the road that runs along the Irno River, the State Railroad tracks near the station, and the sea. The intervention has redesigned the entire urban area abutting the shopping center.

A sculpture, the Lighthouse of Justice by Ben Jakober and Yannich Vu, designed and created at the same time as the structure, is placed near the main entrance to the Citadel.
