Extended description

The most important urban intervention in the city is definitely the redesign of the waterfront. The maritime station designed by architect Zaha Hadid (1950/2016) – one of the world’s most luminous Archistars – is an essential component of this redesign, linking the port with the Lungomare through the connected Liberty Square. Located on the Molo Manfredi of the commercial harbor, the structure is an architectural intervention of the highest quality, in a scenic spot, overlooking the city, close to the Amalfi Coast, open to the entire Gulf of Salerno.

The mobile and sinuous forms of the building, a oyster with a hard shell, characterize this work that marks a relationship between sea and sky. The soft lines and a system of stairs, of walkways open to the void, give the building that character of fluidity, which is accentuated by the colored ceramic tile roofing (a tribute to the local ceramic tradition), which at night lights up in luminous LEDs.

The maritime station is expected to play a key/role in the development of port tourism, opening up the city to tourists who disembark here and who will be able to access the city’s waterfront by crossing Liberty Square. Today, the facility is also used for events and demonstrations, which rely on the bar on the premises.
