Extended description

In the 1930s, the Salerno City Council initiated a major program of public works, to be carried out mainly on the land resulting from the setback of the beach. Prominent among the numerous buildings constructed during that period was City Palace, designed by architect Camillo Guerra. Built on an area of 5,000 square meters, with a typically Fascist style, the imposing building features a beautiful porch and a large movie theater
.
(Cinema Teatro Augusteo).

The two-flight monumental staircase leads to the main floor where the Marble Hall is located, which in 1944, when Salerno became the capital of the Kingdom, hosted the first meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Government of National Unity. The walls of the hall, almost completely covered in polychrome marble, feature a large frage painted by Salerno artist Pasquale Avallone, depicting highlights of the city’s history.

The nearby Sala del Gonfalone features a splendid glass coffered ceiling.

In the outer corridor, bronze statues sculpted by Gaetano Chiaromonte, which were originally placed outside the Palace, can be admired.

The Palace is rich in works of art that constitute a kind of civic museum awaiting its enhancement.
