Extended description

Sant’Andrea is one of the oldest church buildings in medieval Salerno, attested as early as the 9th century. The Lavina stream, one of the many streams that descend from Mount Bonadies, flows under the road and gives the church its name. The church is a stratification of three different buildings, the oldest of which is buried more than six meters below the level of the present one and has traces of antique frescoes depicting the four archangels.

An upper level, probably from the 10th century, has more fragments of frescoes and a Greek inscription.

The present level is from the 12th century, with still traces of frescoes, as well as decorations from the Baroque period.

A high bell tower flanks the church and must have towered over the entire ancient city. Its present configuration with ogival arches is of Gothic design.
