Alongside religious rituals, Salerno has been able to build a “tradition of the contemporary”. The Salerno International Film Festival, founded in 1946, is one of the oldest in Italy; it has been joined by Linea d’Ombra, an avant-garde laboratory for young, multimedia cinema. Not to be outdone is the Salerno Literature Festival, which has transformed the Historic Center into one of the most important literary salons in southern Italy. These events represent modern Salerno: a city that protects its past but constantly dialogues with the languages of the future.
