The Church of St. Lucy, located today in a beautiful little square that opens onto Via Roma, was erected in the 1400s near what was the city’s Jewish quarter, the Judaica. Close to the walls, this neighborhood had been inhabited by a large Jewish community until the 13th century, a community that engaged in handicrafts and has left no traces except in place names.
The church, richly decorated at the foundation, has had a series of renovations that have radically changed its structure and even its lost decoration. What we see today is the version from the second half of the 19th century, after Unification, and the frescoes adorning the walls are attributable to that period. Thewooden statues of St. Lucy and the Immaculate (particularly beautiful), however, are from the 18th century.
