May is the month in which Salerno rediscovers its glorious medieval past with the Fair of the Rediscovered Crucifix. Once a livestock fair of international significance (even mentioned in Basile’s Pentamerone), it now revives in the Historic Center as an evocative re-enactment. Amidst merchants, artisans and figurants, the city recalls the legend of the Magician Berliario and the power of the Crucifix, transforming the Carmine district and the ancient heart into a living theater that draws citizens and tourists alike on a journey back in time.
